For months, Martha had patiently listened to Conner’s pining, then his gushing when the two boys finally got together. She’d been vaguely aware of the boy's presence in her house now and again when Conner shuttled him back and forth from Gotham. But other than a very polite introduction and a few passing hellos, Tim had mostly managed to evade her attempts to assimilate him into the family. He was skittish. And sneaky. More than once, Martha had wondered if he didn’t possess some kind of special ability like her son, invisibility or teleportation or something ridiculous like that. The matter wasn’t helped by Conner’s tendency to squirrel the boy away for his own private enjoyment.

It was pitiful, to be thinking like this while being kissed stupid, hands skimming over warm skin. His heart was in his throat, stopping his breath. He needed to say something, say how tangible this emotion felt, a real, hulking thing that sat next to him in bed alone, that followed him around the ED, that sat heavy in his chest every time he was in Dennis’s orbit. How terrified he was. How mortifying this was, to be seen right through, exposed and vulnerable, his soft underbelly on full display. Robby’s head was spinning, mind clouded with vitriol, years and years of running, of waiting for the other shoe to drop. His mouth started to form the words, to push him away, to drop to his knees in prayer, the words that fell from his lips instead, was—

“How do you shotgun with smoke?” Kevin’s perfect eyebrows furrow. He won’t admit to getting them waxed, but Jean knows the truth.
“Oh right, you’re a drinker. Jean, is it okay if I demonstrate on you?”
Jeremy’s eyes shine so brightly, skin glows so warm, Jean couldn’t possibly say no. “Okay,” he answers. Because he’s allowed to, and because Jeremy likes it, Jean digs his right hand into Jeremy’s hair and leans closer.
A deep inhale, then Jeremy nearly closes the distance between their lips. He blows a stream of smoke into Jean’s awaiting mouth, and watches Jean exhale it back out the nose.
Turning to tap the ashes off, Jeremy shrugs to Kevin. “That's a shotgun. From one person to another.”
Looking up, Jean expects anything aside from what he finds: Kevin Day, Queen of the Court, blushing.

Impulse was shocked at how friendly Skizz was. In the three years he had been at this high school and the many years of knowing some of the other students from grade school, no one had ever paid this much attention to him. “Oh, that’s nice of you to say, and yeah sure it’s fine,” he responded, hoping his pause wasn’t too noticeable.
“Okay, that’s great! See you around, homie!” Skizz chirped before picking up his bag and walking out of class, leaving Impulse there to contemplate what just happened to him.
