Summary
An ablation study aims to determine the contribution of a component to an AI system by removing the component, and then analyzing the resultant performance of the system.
Deleting Caine was not the plan. And his absence led to a whole set of new problems, ranging from the destabilization of the Amazing Digital Circus to a more murderous AI trying to take control of the mainframe. Retrieving him was a matter of practicality. They might not trust him and were definitely wary of him, but his presence was their only way to survive.
Knowing that the humans that you love and desperately want to make happy instead fear and hate you (for admittedly good reasons) and only brought you back because they have no choice was not the best feeling for an AI never designed to handle emotions in the first place. It would be much better to only keep the parts that they need and discard the rest.

There are trigger warnings at the beginning of certain chapters.
All characters listed are featured, but Jyn, Cassian, Chopper, Kaytoo, Baze, Churrit, Bohdi, Luke, very non-canon Kes, Shara, and original characters (future children and such) are featured more than the others.
There is sporadic sexual content, but it doesn’t seem to rise past the mature rating. There is some graphic violence, it is not in most chapters.

During previous incidents, Dr. Gurathin had messaged me over the feed with his objections, asking that I retrieve the identified drone and not use it to re-infiltrate his personal living space. Luckily, Mensah had bought me two cases of drones, so I was able to use a different one for each new infiltration, adhering to his request.
This time, he had unexpectedly dropped a container of hot liquid over the drone. It was still functional (a drone that couldn’t handle water would be useless for planetside deployments) but the audio was muted and its visual inputs were restricted to the interior of a First Landing University mug. I could probably push the mug off the furniture surface using the drone’s propulsion system, but I was getting a 99.2% risk assessment that this action would cause mug to break. That had an 84.6% chance of turning this incident from a minor annoyance into a Big Fucking Deal involving meetings and consensus and talking about this, ugh.

The last thing he saw was the headset being shoved on his eyes as the world went blank.
Booting up. Player 001.
-“So what, he’s a HUMAN?!” Z–Riley yelled. “It appears so…” Grant nearly whispered. He was still staring. He hadn’t moved at all since Caine’s eyes were revealed. “-AND HE JUST DIDN’T TELL US?” Riley continued. “I-I didn’t know…” Caine tried. The room clearly heard him, but no one spoke.
No. I didn’t know because it’s not true. This must be some kind of…dream. Or whatever they called it. He’d had it explained to him as basically the brain freeing up storage space by playing out thoughts from the day. It sounded strange, but maybe this was it. All made up by his creative AI self. It had to be. He didn’t know how he could even do such a human function, but it was more believable than this.
“Whaaat? It’s just one more secret on top of not telling us there was a way to leave!” Jackie grinned. That felt like a punch to the hard drive. Caine wanted to cry out that he really thought they couldn’t leave, that he knew much less than they clearly thought he did. When he tried, the words didn’t come out. They felt caught in his throat, and he choked. Why were human voices so unreliable?!
He felt a liquid run down his face, dripping down once it reached his chin. He reached his shaking hand out to wipe it, but it kept coming. Suddenly, he couldn’t breathe.
“Stop, he’s crying…” Zoey sniffled, her voice barely a whisper.

“Imagine if you were an AI with every power imaginable over the world around you for as long as you can remember, and suddenly you were shoved into a human body with weaknesses, flaws, and…and feelings! You act like you don't know how that feels, but you do, don't you!? It's the exact reverse of what happened to you! So you should know it sucks!”“Bu-” Riley began, but Gan—Zoey gently put a hand on their shoulder. “I think…Abby has a point,” She said. “Arriving in the circus was already disorienting…I can't imagine how much worse it must be to leave as someone who's never been human before.”
“Oh come on, he has to be lying about the not knowing thing, right?” Riley asked hysterically. “How can someone not know that they’re human?”
Despite the tears being mostly gone thanks to Abigail’s defense and Zoey’s empathy, Caine still couldn’t speak. He didn’t have an answer to that question anyways.
“What? Human got your tongue?” Jackie grinned. Everyone glared at her. “What, I thought it was funny.”
“You think everything’s funny.” Riley grabbed the bow off of the hoodie’s ear. Jackie practically lunged for it.
“My point still stands. Even if he was human and knew, you all know how it feels to go back into your human body after being digital for so long.” She turned toward Grant.
Grant paused for a moment, still looking at Caine, before suddenly realizing Abigail was addressing him. He shrugged, playing with his thumbs. “It was quite disorienting, considering I was in there for the greater half of seventeen years,” He almost laughed.
“But he tortured us. He’s EVIL.”
“He didn’t seem so evil when we found him. We haven’t even let him explain himself!”
“Why should we?! Villains don’t get second chances.”
“Do you even hear yourself?!”
-“It was pretty funny when Jackie almost got you to set yourself on fire,” Riley almost laughed again. “It was not.” Caine defended. The showman persona was almost completely missing from his voice, which was sort of terrifying when he thought about it.
“Joking, joking. Not like you’d pick up on that anyway.” Riley turned away, messing with their rings. That irritated Caine. Sure, they were right, it hadn’t even crossed his mind that they might be joking, but it felt incredibly dehumanizing to just be told you couldn’t understand basic human things such as humor.
Dehumanizing.
Why did he keep thinking that?
He wasn’t human. Well, right now he was, in the dream, but that was beside the point.
“...listen,” Riley started as Caine toweled off his face. “I don’t think I’ll be ready to forgive you anytime soon, at least not as soon as some of the others look like they’re gonna,” They breathed. “I hated how you just gave me a duct tape solution and ignored it when it wasn’t working.”
Caine turned toward them confusedly. “Oh, yeah. Duct tape is like…normal tape but stronger? But my point is that it’s still tape? Ugh, whatever.”
